Silverstone Racing Circuit main stand

A racy finish

Project Overview:

The Silverstone Wing provides world-class facilities for teams and spectators at the race circuit including hospitality and VIP spectator zones, 4000 sq metres of exhibition space, 2000 sq metres of flexible conference space, a new podium, media centre, race control building and garages.

Flight and velocity were incorporated into the design brief for its construction, bringing together motor sport and Silverstone's connection with aviation history. The roof area spans 9,700 sq metres and is an iconic feature, stretching uninterrupted across the entire building with a 'wing tip'  30 metres above ground.

With the building measuring 390 metres in length, the contractors, Buckingham Group, needed a powder coater that could handle high volume for coating rainscreen cladding, decorative feature panels and soffit. The cladding elements that Powdertech coated covered 1,200 tonnes of steel erected in total.

The Solution:

Powdertech (Corby) Ltd met with the designers and fabricators, and visited the site in order to be fully conversant with the demands of the job, in terms of scale and overall design. High performance architectural powder with Qualicoat class 1 rating were chosen. In particular the finish needed to have excellent colour consistency between batches.

Benefits:

  • Powdertech's plant easily accommodated the largest of the panels - 3m by 1.5m
  • The high quality of powders used by Powdertech, and our  5- stage pre-treatment for pre-galvanized steel ensure the maximum longevity of the finish.
  • Exacting build schedules demand consistency & reliability of packaging and on time delivery. This project  required the panels to be coated and delivered in weekly batches and to be ready for a prestigious opening ceremony something that our 25-years’ experience enabled us to achieve.
