Balconies on the Sussex coast

Facing Up to the Environment

Project overview:

Powdertech was commissioned to coat steel balconies for a  McCarthy & Stone development of new houses on a coastal road in Seaford, Sussex.  The balconies directly face the sea and are less than 100 metres from the shore . They are constantly surrounded by moist air with high salinity and rain water heavily laden with chloride from the sea.

The solution:

Involvement at an early stage, advising that the steel should be galvanized and that the design must eliminate sharp edges which can cause localised thinning and fracturing of the coating was essential. A 9-stage pre-treatment process for galvanized steel ensures that all surfaces of the metal  are treated by fully immersing the components. Korroprime 10v, an anti-corrosive primer coat was applied to all parts of the fabrication, whether on display or hidden from view. Finally a high quality polyester powder top coat was applied.

The benefits:

The combination of three coatings,  the quality of the powders and the coating process will ensure the best possible performance  in this harsh environment.  Early involvement in a project gives peace of mind that the specification is correct.
