Façade solar shading, Forbury Place, Reading

Project Overview

Forbury Place, newly built in Reading, five minutes from the railway station, offers high-end office accommodation. The building displays stunning architectural features, both internally and externally, which combine to create a modern and highly efficient environment, achieving a target BREEAM rating of 'Excellent' and an EPC rating of 'B'.

The vertical fins provide solar shading, shielding the interior from heat gain yet allowing maximum light to penetrate. From top to bottom of the glazed East and West facades, the sense of movement and pattern formed by the blades is enhanced by variations in light falling on the distinctive white and bronze colours used to coat either side of the fins.

Coating Twisted Curves

Powdertech's plant facilities easily accommodate large fabrications. In total, 2,500 m2 of aluminium fins & façade panels were powder coated. The twisted and curved nature of these fins presented quite a logistical challenge as one side of each fin had to be coated in RAL 9002 white satin and the other in California bronze gloss. Ingenuity was required to control the powder film thickness onto a 3-dimensional panel that required a high visual integrity. The consistency of colour across every fin had to be of the highest quality in order to achieve the design effect.  Finally, packaging the fins for delivery required extreme care.
