Perforated aluminium feature façade, Amazon MSCP, London

The Artistic Potential of Beautifully Finished Perforated Metal

Overview

Large uninteresting warehouse buildings and multi-storey car parks benefit from a contemporary design style in order to offset their impact on the local environment. Amazon is completing a new multi-storey warehouse and distribution centre in Neasden, north London, forming part of the company’s plans to upgrade its international distribution infrastructure. A huge team of employees necessitates a large multi-storey car park.

The striking image formed across the car park façade, seen in the photographs, is created by perforated aluminium and a suitable powder coating finish, and is inspired by the nearby Wembley Stadium

High-performance coatings

The well-known façade manufacturers, Ash & Lacy, produced the perforated metal panels. The image is created by perforations of different size and pitch in the aluminium panels - rather like a pixelated image, creating darker and lighter areas on the panels. Precision powder coating and chrome free pre-treatment was used to ensure that powder fully covered the inside of the perforations to give total protection against corrosion. The client chose a soft pale grey finish from Axalta, BS 00A05 matt, to blend in with surrounding buildings and the skyline. Powdertech pre-treated and coated 1500 square metres of metal on both sides.
